01 May Family Time
This week Sarah had a day of teacher training and so I took the day off work to be with the children. We went out to the Black Country Museum (a great day out, btw) and all of us had a great time.
To be honest, much as I enjoyed the museum, the best but was getting to spend the day with my fabulous children. I love them, and so I enjoy spending time with them.
I don’t think it’s too great a leap to think that God feels the same way about us. The Bible is pretty clear that God loves us:
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. (1 John 4:8-9 ESV)
…in fact the whole of the Bible tells the story of God’s love for his people!
Because he loves us, he enjoys it when we spend time with him.
For the LORD takes pleasure in his people;
He adorns the humble with salvation.
(Psalm 149:4 ESV)
God takes delight when we spend time with him, both those moments when we eagerly seek to find out more about who he is and what he has done, and the times when we just need to offload a bit.
Spending time with God helps me realise my place in the universe. Although I am only 1 of 6 billion people alive, God chooses to call me ‘son’, ‘friend’, ‘heir’. Being with him reminds me of this privilege, and inspires me to serve him and love him more and more.
The more time I spend with God, the more I learn about him, and the more I want to spend time with him.
The songwriter Andy Park sums this up:
“This is the never-ending cycle of worship, revelation, more worship and more revelation. The more we see, the more we worship, the more we worship, the more we see”.
