The Soup Run

The Soup Run
The Crown Church helps serve as part of a city-wide Soup Run which is co-ordinated by churches and Christian organisations across the city. Through this network, food and warm drinks are served every evening in to the homeless and those in need. This is much needed provision and is often the only food/drinks some people will have in a day. There are approximate 60-80 people who come to the Soup Run each evening. At the Soup Run we serve the following:
Individual food bags containing food donated
Whilst the Soup Run does meet a practical need, it is also a great opportunity for us to get to know the people who come along. We often stay after serving to chat with the people. This builds caring relationships and demonstrates the love of Jesus. We offer prayer to those who would like it.
We serve on the Soup Run whenever there is a 5th Monday in the month. The dates for 2014 are:
31st March
30th June
29th September
29th December
If you are interested in serving the Soup Run, there are three ways to be involved:
1. Pray: please pray for those coming along, those serving and opportunity to get to know people and build relationships with them. Pray for opportunities to pray for people and to share the gospel.
2. Donate: if you would like to donate some food to give out on the night that would be great. The ideal type if food would be individual packets/items of food that doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge. Things like packets of crisps, chocolate bars, cereal bars are perfect – the type of food you would put in your lunch box. Fruit is also good but this will need to be donated the day before the Soup Run.
3. Serve: there are two ways to serve. You could help prepare the sandwiches and food bags to be sent out with the Soup Run. This is prepared within 24hrs the Soup Run and is usually a couple of hours. The other way is to help serve at the Soup Run itself. This will involve serving the soup, sandwiches, food bags and tea as well as staying to chat with those that come along. The Soup Run starts at 8pm and is usually finished by around 9.30pm.
If you are interested in finding out more about the Soup Run or want to get involved, please speak to either Gavin Orton or Dave Garner.
